Dominic McKenzie Architects has won permission for a highly contextual new build house in the centre of Hampstead Village.

The proposed house, which will replace six existing council garages behind New End Square, consists of an L-shaped form in plan, wrapping around a protected oak tree. The mass of the house is broken down in to three sub volumes each topped with a gable ended roof intended to evoke Hampstead Village’s tight grain and irregular roofscape. Internally, a terraced series of living spaces will rise from the upper ground floor kitchen, through a mid level dining room, to the first floor living room, framing spectacular views in each room.

Overall the house is intended as a sympathetic contemporary addition to the highly mixed Hampstead Village context, bridging the gap between neighbouring historic listed buildings and 1970s council housing.
