Dominic McKenzie Architects have recently received planning for this new build restaurant and block of flats on the Holloway Road. The project is located at 270 Holloway Road, just north of Holloway Road tube station.
The building will replace an existing low quality, smaller-scale property containing a café and shared maisonette above. In so doing our proposals are intended to reinstate the original metropolitan scale of Holloway Road. The new block will contain four two-bed flats with lift access, one with a private rear terrace; above a restaurant at ground floor level.
The architectural approach for the proposed façade responds to the many high quality Victorian buildings which used to line Holloway Road, some of which still exist, some of which have been demolished. The use of arched forms for glazing and entrance portals can/ could be seen on key historic public buildings such as Jones Brothers department store, Holloway Road tube station, the Marlborough Theatre (demolished) and the Electric Palace Cinema (demolished), not to mention many private apartment buildings.
