The remodelling and rear extension of a large ground floor flat in South Hampstead Conservation Area. The existing modern flat layout disrespected the original house’s architecture and created a number of strangely configured bedrooms.
Dominic McKenzie Architects’ proposals restore the proportions and sense of grandeur of the house. To the rear a new extension is proposed to sit modestly at the base of the house connecting the flat’s public rooms with the garden. The extensive use of minimally detailed glazing, recalls classic Modernist projects such as Mies van de Rohe’s Farnsworth House and allows the house’s original bay window to be preserved and legible through the layered fenestration.
Planning permission has recently been awarded and construction will begin in early summer 2016.
